Essential Yoga at the DAHLC

Today, as a way to connect with others and meet a friend for some accountability, I attended a yoga class at the DAHLC instead of doing my own practice. Or maybe not instead of - maybe in addition to . . . the day has a few usable hours remaining!

Thank you to the instructor, Julie. Her gentle yet assertive personality and presence allowed peace to settle in the room as she spoke over childs-posers (and whichever other poses people took to begin their class - I was working on myself and working on letting go - is that an oxymoron? - of what others were doing.)   I am so grateful to have practiced in a room full of others today. Certainly, I was reminded of my tendencies to compare/contrast, look to others rather than listen for instruction and allow my body to follow, and the consciousness that others are around me (including colleagues and clients) and may be judging me.  More importantly, I was very much at ease in class today - more than I have been in perhaps any yoga class (or group fitness class???) in a long while.  How so?  I was more confident in my body's ability to move in and out of the poses, people of all shapes-sizes-abilities were in attendance, and I blocked my view of self in the mirror to tune in to my body by awareness.  Several tools are available to students in the studio where the practice is held, and I used yoga blocks and a sitting/kneeling pad with very little misgiving or condemnation toward myself! #SelfCompassion success! More often than usual, I was able to close my eyes and move through the flow, listening to the instructor and moving with as much grace, strength, balance, and fluidity I could muster without being overly controlling.

I give partial credit to the 30 for 30 challenge and my mostly-consistent-almost-daily practice for the last few weeks.  Thank you, #YogaInternational, for the #30for30 #yogachallenge.  I look forward to my remaining 10 practices from this particular challenge, as well as MUCH more yoga in the coming days, months, and years. :)

Tri-ing, again!

In the books: Long Course Triathlon, 07.19.2014

Sort of.

Apparently, the timing system at the event wasn't working properly AND I wasn't fast enough to capture with back-up timing.  Oh well, I know I completed all of the events in the time I had anticipated! Plus, I have my medal and finisher shirt :)

Here's a recap:

  • Pick the event - Paul Bunyan Triathlon in Bemidji, MN. July 19, 2014.
  • Start training for this event - I had completed the Med City Marathon Relay with 3 others in May, so my running, yoga, and core foundations were in place.  I needed to add the bike and swim.
  • Be dedicated, even during long weeks and on special trips or mini-vacations - some days I wasn't home until 8pm and still had a workout planned.  Two weekends before the event, I went to a rodeo and visited friends; brought the bike along to get a ride in.
  • Arrange for room & board - I have generous, kind, supportive friends who let me [us] stay at their house the whole weekend and even came to the race to cheer!
  • Pack, drive 5 hours, get to bed at a decent time, sleep a few winks, and wake up in time to have breakfast and coffee! before arriving at the course moments after the transition area opened.
  • Grab race packet, clamber into wet suit, get marked (race #), and pick out appropriate color swim cap (denotes which wave, or flight, of swim).
  • Quite possibly the hardest part of all = getting into the water to acclimate pre-race. BRRRRRRR!
  • And then . . . do what training has prepared me for! Swim - Bike - Run!
The Paul Bunyan Long-Course Triathlon is a 1-mile swim, 20-mile bike, and 5-mile run.

Done!

I am grateful to have a supportive workout buddy and training partner to keep me motivated and encourage me to challenge the limits I sometimes put on myself.  What an accomplishment for both of us.  Now we gear up for our next event in a couple of weeks - looking forward to it!

A Half Marathon later . . .

Holy smacks! Has it really been that long since I have taken the time to enlighten all (4) of you who read my silly ramblings as to the goings-on of my life?!  WHOA.  Time to catch up!

Well, that might take too long.  I think I'll just start with the huge event/milestone/torture that I conquered over the weekend and take it from there.

FIRST TIME HALF-MARATHON FINISHER right here, folks!  WOOHOO!!

Finishers!
Did it!
Training was a lot of work.  I finished most of it - started base training in November, registered for the race in February, and got 'er done at the end of April.  WHEW.  Check that off the 'life to-do' list.  I walked, ran, walked and ran in the rain and snow, swam, did a bunch of yoga, lots of core exercises, a little bit of biking (indoors), and slept :-) and ate!  When my body wasn't feeling quite right, I really worked on taking a close look at what was happening in my life - emotional/mental stressors manifest as physical symptoms in the body and I definitely felt that!  Maybe I will work on being more mindful in logging my training for the next event . . . which is potentially coming up in less than two months . . . for the last couple of days, though, I have been drinking lots of water, eating good recovery foods, resting [napping!] a lot, and taking walk and stretch breaks throughout the day.

Overall, I am thankful that I got this done and know that my mom's support was crucial to this accomplishment - I can't say that enough.  And I am SO PROUD of her for completing another half marathon!  She rocks. :-)

Zen Habits - Fit Lifestyle

Good day to you!

Whether you have already put in some due time to move your body or have the intention of doing so after reading this blog :) there is something that I would like you to read!

I'm taking this opportunity to shameless plug a fantastic blog recommended by a friend last year.  As with nearly every post by Leo B., I want to do just about everything that he writes!  Take the opportunity to look at his simple Zen Habits: 20 Small Actions to Create a Fit Environment. You will either be inspired or will remember why you do what you already do! :-)

Have a fantastic day!

New Year, New Ideas!

Happy First Monday of 2012!!

One of the neat ideas that my new roomy and I are going to give-a-go is incorporating "ultimate superfoods" into our weekly nutrition!  What does this mean?  Glad you asked :)

I found the book, '100 Best Health Foods', at an outlet store and snagged the book as a resource for my professional life - I want to use it as a tool in coaching wellness.  Meanwhile, my roommate and I had the GENIUS idea that we would take each of the 100 foods listed and write them on index cards, draw two each week, and incorporate them into our meals for the week!  The plan is to pick two of the 100 at random (from a jar or something) and use the food item in 1-2 meals or snacks during the week.  Most of the items are not difficult to find, whether they be apples or almonds or cherries - but some of the items are not what either of us typically look for (sardines, radicchios) . . . we are going to figure out the more specific plan to follow later this evening or tomorrow, so I will be able to tell you ALL the details :) Meanwhile, as I was writing all of the foods on index cards this morning, I thought, "Why not blog each week about the foods we try and share the recipes we make?!"  COOL! Kinda like the book/movie Julie and Julia :) wherein Julie creates the recipes of Julia Child's cookbook and blogs about them!  This blog, of course, will still be about keeping moving and exercising, of course, but this is a neat twist on trying different ways to incorporate healthful foods!  Hope it turns out to be fun :)

WowzaYowzaPow!

Heeey!!!  How are you??  What has been the best part of your day, so far?!

Whattap, my friends and followers?  I have been MIA for way-too-long, but with good reason and some interesting events to catch ya'll up on!

I'll work kinda backward here, starting with today being the 28th of December in Minnesota and we do NOT have any SNOW!  Wowza!!  Went for a 45min/2.5mi walk with my new roomy and her dog today as they showed us the new trail in the town we just moved to...oh yeah...my dog and I moved back to MN after I *graduated*!!  Yeehaw!

Yesterday, my ma and I helped my stepdad move a bunch of stuff at his business to a different property so that he can improve the quality of the Brick Oven Bakery!  What a job - we are "good helpers", and as my mama always says, "Good thing [your stepdad] has strong women in his life!" Amen to that.  We lifted and hauled for 2 hours; although moving isn't always a fun project, I reminded myself (out loud, sometimes) that it was good exercise :)  A little bit of stiffness and glute ouchies today - yowza - but used good form and don't have any back or hip pain! YAY!

Monday, my awesome extended-family on ma's side went BOWLING after Christmas dinner!  I haven't been bowling in years - maybe 6 or 7 years?  Haven't been able to because it really hurt my back for a long time.  Not this week!  Yeeeeehawww!!  It was a LOT of fun!  Even better, my awesome team (pictured below and missing one teammate) won two awards - so, we win! :)  "Team Jake" decided we were the ultimate winners because Captain Jake had the highest score out of the four teams/8 games played, and I had the most single-pins (aka #1-POW!).  So, WE WIN! :)  My lil' cousin in front got to take home the Christmas balloon as his prize!

All this excitement and that's only the last three days!  I won't go back any further than last Saturday, December 24, when I had the opportunity to lead Yoga at Total Wellness Coaching as a sub for the regular instructor.  I will be taking on more classes next month as a substitute and hope to be incorporated by the business as an independent contractor as much as possible!  Meanwhile, I'm still looking for other jobs . . .

I still need to update ya'll on the trip that my former roomy and I took to Warm Mineral Springs . . . ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh . . . I want to go back!  As soon as I get those pictures uploaded I will post :)  Until then - stay active!!  Move a little bit more each day.  Join a class, take your neighbor's dog for a walk, do some sit-ups while watching your favorite TV show, or use the stairs at work instead of the elevator!

Thankful for Walks :)

Happy Belated Thanksgiving :)  Although, I think we can continue to be grateful long after the actual 'day of' Thanksgiving, don't you??  Speaking of - I've decided that Black Friday may be equiv to Good Friday.   Think about it: day of family, friends, feasting, thankfulness, gratitude....followed by a day of madness; likened to a day of family, friends, feasting, humbleness...followed by a day of sadness.  Oof-dah.  I'm thankful that I slept in today :-)

Yesterday was a lot of fun - spent the afternoon with long-time friends and my roommate with a DELICIOUS meal (of course!!), great stories and a LOT of laughter, and a **walk after dinner** :-)  HAPPY!!!  Physical activity, as a group, 5 of us went for a nice, meandering walk around the neighborhood after stuffing our faces with amazingly delicious grub.  ::--SO THANKFUL--::

Want to see?  Check it out . . .

My plate. And I ate it. ALL!

Get It Done!

Today's "title" has multiple connotations :)  One being the fact that I volunteered to lead this morning's early morning workout team at Living Well.  The other being that I have a lot to get done in the next couple of days!

This morning's workout consisted of the following:

Squat + hammer curl + overhead press (1x15)
Good Morning + bent over row x2 (1x15)
Side lunge + lateral leg lift (1x10)
REPEAT x1
Reverse/inverted (?) plank + 1-leg lift (1x15), switch legs
Russian Twists w/ weight plate (45seconds)
Low-level bicycles (45seconds)
REPEAT x1
Dynamic stretching/Yoga

I designed and completed the workout with the members, so I broke a sweat and "got my workout done" this morning - makes for a great accountability 'partner'!

The other stuff consists of a lot of homework, some more homework, and lots of homework.  Some other items on my "to-do" list include cleaning out my car (+ vacuuming), tidying my room, cleaning up the kitchen and living room = all physical activity, so I can choose the perspective of all of the chores benefiting my health physically, as well as mentally :)  As far as the homework, well, I hope someday I am able to link what I write to this blog because I am very passionate about my topics.  For my evaluation course, I'm working on a proposal for an evidence-based program called ALIVE! (A Lifestlye Intervention Via Email) that incorporates physical activity and nutrition into one intervention for worksite health promotion.  For my theories course, I'm reviewing some literature and working on a paper regarding the use of the Biopsychosocial Model in Chronic Pain Management.

Stay tuned! :)

FRUSTRATED, much?!

DANGIT!

You have no idea that I actually had those little symbol thingies %*&!#$ in the "post title", erased, re-wrote them, deleted, and re-re-wrote them.  I think about dumb stuff like that a lot.  Too much.  And then they didn't even work! %*&!#$!!!!!!!

Today came after a really strange and crappy yesterday.  And don't mock me by saying that today always comes after yesterday, or yesterday wouldn't be yesterday.  I KNOW.  I'm having ISSUES!  Yesterday was another crapshoot to get out of bed and get going in the morning, followed by not just one but two attempts at my life by individuals on 2-wheeled vehicles, a mess-up at the Stadium for football tickets, a reprimand from my immediate supervisor for something that was *none of my concern*, felt too cruddy to visit with a friend in the evening, and ended up being awake until 3:30am.  3:30!!  Just sitting at the computer, typing letters to my health insurance company and the President of the United States.  No big deal.  Oh, and watching The Tudors on Netflix.  Crazy, delusional pseudo-insomnia.

TODAY.  Started off a bit better than yesterday, although sleeping in meant a) missing morning workout and b) not really getting extra sleep because I stayed up all damn night.  But, I woke up and got to work and it was okay.  Came home and had a delicious salad (mixed greens, cauliflower, avacado, sunflower seeds, garbonzo beans *yummy*, and of course, dressing--I've been using olive oil + vinegar  Newman's Own.)  *Oh, by the way, I ate McDonalds yesterday.  Embarrassing.  I wanted it and kept thinking about it and got it.  And felt SUPER guilty after.* BACK TO TODAY quit being so distractable!  I decided today to try on the dress that I will be wearing for my brother and sister-in-law(to be)'s wedding in October.  I had this overwhelming craving for chicken and fries.  And they weren't even very good.  Stupid.  See?  Even health educators and personal trainers succomb to pressures and lack will-power!  THE DRESS.  Tangent, much?  While talking to my mom on the phone, I wieldly maneuvered myself into the dress and started attempting to zi...iipp...fat gal in a dress-too-smaaaaalll >>Tommy Boy shoutout<<.  Dangit!  Okay.  So, at this point, I am laughing and swearing and wanting a cheeseburger and wanting to go for a run all at the same time.  Do I try some diet modification and continue increasing my workout routine?  (Yes).  Do I want to? (Sort of).  Maybe I can go back in and get a dress in a size bigger?  (Yes, please!)  Problem with size bigger is that my mental health will suffer.  Win with size bigger is that I don't need to stress about getting enough exercise and not indulging in fun foods.  Problem with size bigger is needing to go to the store (hassle) and see if they have a bigger size (embarrassing).  Win with size bigger - well, maybe just a neutral - is that the dress I have is a size "smaller" than I 'was', anyway, because it's an A-line, so it's really 'okay' to get a size bigger (riight).  Problem with size bigger is that I will have to figure out a way to keep the top from falling off my boobless chest.  Hmm.

So.  After taking off the dress, hollering a couple of explicits, and laughing, I put on my socks and shoes, rounded up the dog and roommate, and we went for a 45 minute walk.  BTN (better than nothing).  My hips really started to hurt around the 25-30 minute mark, but we weren't going fast, so we kept the pace.  *Mom suggested that I try Watkins Linimax for the pain that I have.  I think I'm going to give it a try.  More on supplements another time - I gotta get this posted "today" (I know - obsess, much?!)

Meanwhile, this evening, I skyped with my sis.  We laughed, grumbled, and commiserated.  I'm not sure what I am going to do about the dress, at this point.  I do know that I need to get my behind to bed and I need to keep moving.  KEEP MOVING!  Couple of really good thoughts from the sis: "Remember, the pain [I have] does not necessarily mean that something is wrong (ie. broken); movement and low impact activity is good," and, "What are you going to do to remedy this [binge eating/crummy food sneaking into diet]?"

Good NIGHT.  :)  Hope you rest well.  I hope I do, too.  Felt good to walk.  Why don't I feel the good effects of the walk PRIOR to walking, or at least some of them, to encourage me to walk?  Hmm.
